Hattian Bala is a district in Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir is located in the disputed Kashmir region. The district headquarters are situated in the town of Hattian Bala. It was part of the Muzaffarabad District until 2009 when it became a separate district.Hattian Bala is bordered by two districts of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir to the north and east, and by Bagh District and Muzaffarabad to the south. The district is primarily hilly and mountainous, with plains along the Jhelum River, which enters the district at the Line of Control (LOC) point at Chakothi and continues northwest through the Jehlum Valley. The rural-urban ratio is 90:10, with the majority of the rural population relying on agriculture, livestock, and forestry for subsistence. Many residents work or are settled abroad, particularly in the Middle East, the UK, and the US, and they support their families back home. The district also has significant hydroelectric potential due to its fast-flowing rivers, with power stations located at Kathai, Leepa, and Sharian. The main languages spoken in the district are Pahari, Gujari, and Kashmiri. Pahari is native to about half of the population, Gujari is spoken by about a third, and Kashmiri is native to one out of six inhabitants.
