Larkana, a district in Pakistan’s Sindh province, is known for its largest city, also named Larkana, situated alongside the Indus River. It holds significance as the home district of the influential Bhutto family. Other towns in the district include Ratodero, Dokri, Bakrani, and Naodero. In 2005, the district was divided, forming a new one called Qamber and Shahdadkot.
Larkana’s history dates back to around 2600 BC, coinciding with the thriving ancient city of Mohen-jo-Daro, located about 30 kilometers south of Larkana city. Present-day Larkana serves as a vital grain-marketing and trade center, noted for its brass and metalware. The city is adorned with numerous markets and bazaars, including the famous John F. Kennedy Market. Larkana is also renowned for its well-maintained gardens and parks.
As the fourth largest city in Sindh, Larkana holds historical significance and is linked with prominent political figures of Pakistan. Surrounding areas include Shikarpur town, Sukkur, Ghar canal, and various archaeological sites. Known as the “Eden of Sindh,” Larkana is predominantly inhabited by Sindhi-speaking locals, although other languages like Urdu, Baluchi, Brohi, Punjabi, Pashto, and Seraiki are also spoken. While the literacy rate may be lower compared to other parts of the district, English is understood by some urban residents, with Sindhi being the primary language of communication for the majority.
