Mirpur Khas stands as the capital city of the Mirpur Khas District and Mirpur Khas Division within Sindh province, Pakistan. It ranks as the 6th largest city in Sindh and the 34th largest in Pakistan. Initially established by the Talpur rulers of the Mankani branch, Mirpur Khas boasts a rich historical legacy.
With a population of 233,916 according to the 2017 Census of Pakistan, Mirpur Khas is renowned for its thriving mango cultivation, earning it the title of the “City of Mangoes.” The city hosts an annual mango festival dating back to 1955, showcasing its diverse array of mango varieties.
Following the completion of the Hyderabad-Mirpurkhas dual carriageway, Mirpur Khas has emerged as a bustling hub of commercial activity. Situated on the Let Wah Canal at coordinates 25°31’39.3″N 69°00’50.6″E, the city lies in the southeastern quadrant of Sindh, 65 kilometers east of Hyderabad and 220 kilometers southwest of Karachi.
While Mirpur Khas boasts a small industrial park, its economy primarily relies on agriculture, with four sugar mills, cotton ginning, and edible oil mills contributing to its economic landscape. However, the city has faced challenges due to a poor law and order situation, resulting in violent conflicts among rival families.
Despite these challenges, Mirpur Khas remains an agricultural powerhouse, producing wheat, onions, sugarcane, cotton, chilies, and, of course, mangoes. The city’s prosperity grew with the construction of the Jamrao Canal in the 1900s, revitalizing irrigation and farming practices.
The city’s demographics reflect its diverse population, with a significant proportion speaking Sindhi, alongside Urdu-speaking migrants who arrived in 1947. Mirpur Khas boasts a rich cultural heritage, evident in its clean environment, numerous parks, museums, tea shops, and the renowned Fruit & Horticulture Research Institute & Farm.
With approximately 60% Muslim and 40% Hindu residents, Mirpur Khas exemplifies cultural diversity and harmony, making it a unique and vibrant city in the heart of Sindh.
